The Same Blackbird is also a physical performance which will take place at the Oxford Botanic Garden on 17 July 2022, with poet, blackbird and violin as part of a poetry evening curated by Alice Oswald. Male blackbirds start singing in late winter. At first they practice a series of subsongs, which they edit and combine into a complex final melody. Alice Oswald's rhapsody observes the same structure. It begins by attending to the blackbird's rehearsal, then searches through various forms to find the right sound. It is a fanfare to awaken the Oxford Garden, whose own response will be heard in July 2022. As performance, The Same Blackbird has been composed by Stevie Wishart and Alice Oswald as part of the 400th anniversary celebrations for Oxford Botanic Garden. It contains recordings of blackbird song, some made by Geoff Sample in 2015 and some by Stevie Wishart in 2021. Stevie has transcribed the songs for violin and Alice has written a response to both the bird and the violin to which Stevie has in turn responded. This three way conversation, between a bird and two humans marks the beginning of a year-long listening to the garden, the results of which will be performed in July 2022.
