Gold and Precious Silver
Performed at West Malling on 23 April 2022
Gold & Precious Silver was one of the commissions entitled
'Six Brandenburgs - Six Commissions' Music@Malling Festival 2022 Stevie Wishart was commissioned to write this new work to accompanying the Bach Brandenburg Concerti. It was premiered at St.Mary's Abbey, West Malling in Kent, performed by Chamber Domaine under the direction of Thomas Kemp, conductor and artistic director of the Music@Malling Festival and as part of a range of new initiates by the Festival. This follows on from a previous commission in 2019, The Last Dance? - a Baroque Tango, when Stevie wrote an accompanying work to Bach's Suites, commissioned by the BBC Proms and presented by the Dunedin Consort under John Butt. https://musicatmalling.com 'Gold and Precious Silver' an intermezzo for J.S.Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.6 according to the respond of the Feast of St Eanswythiae by the choir mistress of West Malling Abbey and 13 blackbird songbursts The starting point and title for this intermezzo uses a chant of West Malling Abbey dedicated to St Eanswythe who was the daughter of King Eadbald, King of Kent. This chant written by the Abbey’s Choir Mistress, can be adapted to thread between the tonalities of the second and third movement of Brandenburg 6, chosen because its special combination of bowed string timbres with harpsichord, but without violin, is very unusual if not unique and opens up new soundworlds for exploration. |
